I have a small company and I would like to expand but I don't have the money. I'm also interested in opening a franchise. Since I am a mother of 4 and already have enough debt I would really rather explore grant options instead of loan options. Can anyone help point me in the direction of minority/women small business loans...Federal, State and Local. I'm in NYC. Thanks.

My name is Aiman Latif. I have a masters degree in Accountancy. I have over 12 years of experience in Accounting. I am registered tax professional. I had been very unlucky find an accounting job in past few years so decided to start my own bookkeeping business from home but the problem is that I don't even have enough cash to buy a computer, software and other office equipment to start my own business. I also want to a take a course while doing my business that will teach me how to start my business, how to market my business and much more. The total cost of all the courses that I want to take is about $10,000. The total office equipment that I need is about $10,000. Total cost to start a business is about $20,000 and I need a loan for about $25,000 so I can keep about $5,000 in my bank at all times just to be on the safe side. At this time I don't have an extra penny to use towards my business. I know my business would be successful if I have all this money to invest in it because I have all the education and background to do this business. I also have a 16 years old daughter, who can help me with my bookkeeping business. Is there an government loan available for people like me, to start my own business? Also, I lost my house in foreclosure last year because of non-payment (mortgage) and I also had to file bankruptcy. My attorneys who were trying to help me save my property through filing bankruptcy and later on modifying my loan, filed bankruptcy and disappeared. They were a scam. I put $109,000 in that house as a down payment and lost each single penny. My interest rate for the first 4 years was about 11% and later on it went down to about 7% so I paid way too much interest on this house also. I purchased this house in 2004 and it was foreclosed in 2010. My question is, is there any loan program that can help me get on my feet and start my earning and living again. If there is, I would really appreciate the references and links. Please send me an email at aimanlatif@aol.com

I think its absolutely despicable that ethnic origin should be used as an excuse for a government handout. Most of these posts appear to be from idle, so-called 'under-priveledged' opportunists, making pleas that sound little more than the begging of tramps on street corners. This is America! If you want something, go and get it, we are all born equal here.

I am an inventer, and I have designed an electronic engine; that is versitile in many applications (like cars, trucks, tractors, boats, airplanes, even for something like an air compressor, etc...). The problem I have ran into, is finding money to get this idea going. I have researched all kinds of government grants, and none apply to my invention. The grants that are out there, apply to hybird engines. And mine is not a hybird. Mine uses electricity; and it's more effecient than a standard electric motor.
I have considered talking to business people about this invention. But I want to be included in my own project. I want to be able to license manufactures to build the motors that I have designed. And I don't want somebody to steal my idea's. All they would have to do is make some changes to my design, and start building these engines thereselves. I would be left out in the cold.
My engine is not patented. Besides, you cannot patent a concept. You have to patent a specific design, and list all of its specifications. So even if I had a patent, companies could still my idea anyway.
Does anybody know a way that I could receive money to get this project rolling?

You are welcome. My ex ruined my life with using my credit union and like you I had not much to my name 7 dollars and my job. I am sorry you went through this too. And to be diagnosed with lupus. Oh that is terrible. There are free clinics

I am the same way about animals. Most of my pets were animals no one could keep or found. My last cat found me. I took him in 2003 and he was with me till 9/22. He got sick so he is at peace. When I was young and had a dog living with my parents the vet we took our dog to said I should be a vet as I had a good way with animals. Mom didn't tell me that till late and science chemistry wasn't my speciality. But there is vet tech and assistant plus working at a pet store.

I use to go to Santa Anita race track with mom and dad. I loved horses before that. I would have loved seeing the morning workouts but I am not for them riding the horses to race at an early age to race. And they do.

I knew a few people who trained horses and a friend who was really good training them got the horses for the movie Seabiscut the movie. I wanted to be a horse trainer or work with horses. (If the horse stables across the street had been buiilt when I was a kid, I would be over there all the time and had a different job.)

Anyhow I got to see the making of the movie one day. Saw many jockeys there and that day Gary Stevens. And I hung out at the stables where he had them. I really wanted to buy one of them as I had a few favorites. I had a great time from time I met him, my friend Bill, till later after the movie learning a lot about horses being around them and riding them.

I hope you get to help animals out to and think about being a foster mom to pets from rescue groups. You have to learn to let go when it is time for them to be adopted.

They have a cat there I really want if he is still there but it is far from me .

Great talking to you and good luck. I have infromation on Lupus in my home page.

Take care and stay in touch

Hello I admire you wanting to help and show your children and grand child the concept of showing love to animals and people. And teach them the concept of money too. I love animals too. I see so many animals on TV waiting to be adopted it is heart breaking. Then there are people in need too.

I can't think of grants to start your business of finding lost pets. There are people who have rescue groups for cats, dogs and you could call one of them to see how they started. I would look for rescue groups and ask them how they got started. There is prosper.com but it is a loan company..

I wish you the best and good to put the city and state you are in so someone maybe able to find something. I tried to find a grant for somone else for company he wanted to start and never did find one plus he looked on his own.

        Best to you

One of the things that you are going to need is a business plan.  Yes there are still angel investors around but you are going to have to search for them and once you do find them they want to know that you are serious about what it is you are wanting to do and that is where your business plan comes in.  However one thing that you should be warned about investors is that if and when you get an investor they will want a part of your business and that will mean that you will not own your own business 100 %.

As someone that does grant research I can tell you that there are grant programs out there to help one start their own business but these kinds of grant programs have very specific requirements.  You may be eligible if you're a minority, want to start some type of business in a rural area that will help employ people, etc......If you want to start looking for grant programs you can start with the official government website where they list their grant programs and you will not have to pay anything.  You can also apply online there.

If you are looking for mentors then you should check out SCORE by going to the Small Business Administration site.  SCORE are retired persons who help give their advice for those who are looking to start a business of their own.

Check with the financial aid office of the school that you want to attend to see if they have information about grants and scholarship programs that you can apply for.

For as long as I have been doing grant research I haven't found a grant program yet that is for people to pay down their debt.  There are some grant programs where you can use the grant money for anything you want and that would include paying down your debt if that is what you choose to do.

We have no extra money for education, nor can we afford for me to stop working to go to school.  Is there money available anywhere for debt repayment and/or grants for acupuncture schooling?  We still have one dependent child at home.

If you go to the official government grant site you should see that they have a grant program in place for "rural" areas.  If your small town can qualify as a rural area then you might want to take a further look at that grant program to see if you are eligible.

You should also go to your own state's website to see if they have any grant programs available.  States (and more local areas) have often started grant programs to help bring new business into the area - so also check your state website as well.

I would like to be able to recieve a grant that would allow me to take advantage of the area's feed by-products, I would like to purchase a piece of equipment that I can utilize to process the feed. Alittle extra for the purchase of associated equipment for storage and the by-product would be helpful. The machine I would l like is $10,500.00 and is in great shape, new it would cost over $20,000.00  If I could recieve a grant $20- 25,000.00 I would greatly appreciated it. I may be classified as disabled but I am willing and able to make this project successful. I am in Northern California.

        Hello Laticia:

I just finished reading your post, and would like to compliment you on your ideas. I do have a question though. Do you really feel that it is your God given right to expect others to pay for the type of lifestyle that you have described?

I mean, I understand if someone has fallen on hard times and may need a little help, but for someone to feel that it is the responsibility of tax payers & our government to provide for us in this manner is, selfish. I mean, when you say, "that it is a God given right to have food, water, shelter, and entertainment" is wrong. I mea, if you read the bible God made it clear that each of us will have to work, and it is from the sweat of our brow that we will eat. Ref.: Genesis 3:19. I don't believe that God ever intended for us to become a drain upon society. It's a shame because there are a lot of people out there that feel the same way, however, people are finally starting to wake up and realize that they are tired of giving their tax dollars away. In fact, I have been writing my state rep. & congress man/woman that they need to start looking for new ways to reform these government assistance programs. I believe that the government should start to impose time limits to those who receive assistance. I mean, as I stated earlier, it is one thing to help those who have fallen on hard times and just need some type of temporary assistance, but it is quite another thing to continue to provide assistance to those that lack the aspiration to do better with their lives, and, who view assistance programs as a form of livelihood. This type of mentality has only served to rob honest hardworking americans of tax dollars.

The quickest to take is to start small and then build your way up! But I get the feeling that this is not the way that you want to go.

If you are talking about getting a grant or loan you will have to realize that you are going to have to show WHY you should be granted any money!

For instance, a lot of the grant programs that I know about that have to do with women wanting to start their own business often requires - at a minimum - a business plan that has to be submitted as part of the application process for a grant (this applies to loans as well). Even if you are seeking an investor the same thing will apply!

There are grant programs out there for those that want to start their own business! As a matter of fact I have recently posted on my blog about a grant program for women that want to start their own business. This is a state grant program so first you would have to see if you are a resident of the right state. There is another grant program for minorities that want to start their own business and the grant award for this grant program is $25,000!

But keep in mind that you have to apply first! You won't automatically be given a grant just because you say that you need one!

I would advise that you first develope a business plan because you have to show that you are serious about what it is that you want to do!

Next comes the research where you seek out the grant programs that you may be eligible for.

My fiance` has been a farmer, successful I might add, for his whole life of 33 years. He began helping his father, whom is a former farmer of tobacco. But he's began his own business 7 years ago. As some of you may, or may not know, farming is a tough business, financially & weather permitting. He has NEVER been late paying the bills, and has EXCELLENT credit(for now!)as well as holding a degree, bachelors in business finance from Georgia Southern University. The problem: The bank where he has been with all this time, has decided that they will NO LONGER FUND LOANS for farmers. We have right at $500,000 invested with this bank, but they are refusing to help now! We also take care of his mother, which is disabled, with a mature mortgage. I work, but only part-time due to medical disabilities, but my salary doesn't begin to cover all of our bills. We have two(2) teenage boys who wish to attend college & have extensive needs & requirements! PLEASE, if anyone could lead us in the direction where we may find some resources to get back on our feet, IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

You have to understand more basically about grant programs in general.  I do know that there are grant programs that open to minorities that want to start their own business - even additional grant programs for women that want to start their own business, etc.....

Most of the grant programs that award grant money for those that want to start their own business will at least require you to submit a business plan.  Do you have one ready to submit?

And probably the most important question that has to be answered is how much grant money are you looking for?

Have you tried the small business administration. Also I knew a man who wrote letters for grants for small businesses, and you said you are a monority and a woman, those two characteristics will get you a grant! Find the planning commision where you live and ask if they have a grant writer. Also find the sba office for where you live and make an appointment and they will get you started. You may not need any money or very little even if you have bad credit. Good luck and God bless you.
